Port Royal Golf Club's Planter's Row course

Designed by Willard C. Byrd and built in 1984, Planter's Row was the last of the three golf courses built at Port Royal Golf Club on Hilton Head Island. But it should be one of the first on your list to play.

Carved through a forest, fairways resemble bowling lanes more than golf avenues. Your drives have to be straight to score well on the course and your approach shots on the money to navigate more trees on the way to small, fast greens. Planter's Row is a golf course of precise execution.

But if you're an average golfer, there are ways out of trouble because the trees aren't densely packed. Punch shots from off the fairway will likely advance the ball.

Water skirts 10 of the holes on the Planter's Row course at Port Royal Golf Club, but only a few times does it require a pure carry. Usually, there is a way around it, giving more options for shorter hitters.

It's a beautiful, park-like golf course without any houses around it. It's just you, golf and lots and lots of trees.

The youngest and longest golf course of its brethren, the Planter's Row Course at Port Royal Golf Club is a solid William Byrd design. In 1985, the course played host to the PGA Senior Tour's Hilton Head Seniors International.
