Designer Clyde Johnston had his work cut out for him when he created the Old South Golf Links in Bluffton.
"We had fresh water wetlands as well as the salt marsh - those always bring issues with the permitting agencies," Johnson said. "We also discovered a couple archeological sites on the property which took a while to excavate, catalogue and write-up a big report."
Once the paperwork was completed, however, Johnson put together a course that lives up to its name - it is a pure Southern golf experience. The course plays just over 6,700 yards and pleasantly wide fairways will help keep your ball in play. But keep in mind the Bermuda grass you're playing on - don't expect too many distance-enhancing rolls.
"Old South's quite an enjoyable round, and the challenge is manageable," said TravelGolf.com writer Jeffrey A. Rendell.
