The vast numbers of vacationers who come here do so with their golf clubs in the trunk. But for those non-golfing spouses, children or guests, there is a ton of stuff to do on and near the island that doesn't involve the joys and frustrations of the game. More isn't always best. While Hilton Head and Kiawah Island host just 23 golf courses, they landed two in the top 10 in a recent ranking of South Carolina tracks. Perennial favorite Harbour Town Golf Links of Hilton Head squeaked by Sage Valley Golf Club for the top spot, National Golf Editor Tim McDonald reports. Meanwhile, Myrtle Beach and the Grand Strand have 116 courses but only one made it into the top 10.

While places like Pinehurst No. 2, The Ocean Course or Harbour Town Golf Links receive plenty of recognition, be sure to check out some of the unsung courses in the Carolinas. Places such as Sea Pines Ocean Course and Pinehurst No. 3 deserve your attention when you are in the area. They are great "second-play" locations that often get overlooked.
