Designed by Pete Dye, Hampton Hall might draw in a few golfers with its star power, but it brings them back with its first-class service and amenities. The golf course is extremely well groomed and appears to have just three colors: green grass, lots of white sand, and blue water. (Fair warning: White emerges where you least want it.)

Island West Golf Club in Bluffton pays attention to all its holes. Even the par 3s, often a course's afterthoughts, are carefully crafted to engage your intellect. This is a sound, well maintained golf course that offers all of the mental challenges of more prestigious Hilton Head-area courses, with a similar level of service at a fraction of the cost.

Golden Bear Golf Club is a very pleasant Carolina course, nicely wooded and tranquil, despite the fact there are homes around the perimeter. There is nothing tricky about the course, though there are a few hidden water hazards. And if you're looking to go low, you will have little to complain about.
